ACONCAGUA PROVINCIAL PARK

The highest point of the Americas and the surrounding landscape was protected by the establishment of the Provincial Park of Aconcagua as of 1983.
Over 71,000 hectares of land make this one of the country’s most emblematic natural spaces and a gateway towards the grandeur of the Andes.

The park provides a range of experiences open to mountaineers and crowds alike:

  • Low-demand walks: like the trip to Laguna Horcones, accessible throughout the year.
  • Day trekking: such as the trip up to Confluencia, the first camp of Aconcagua (available between November and April).
  • Multi-day trekking: towards emblematic places like Plaza Francia or Plaza de Mulas (available between mid-November and mid-February).

Access and Authorizations
All activity within the park implies the need for an entry permit.
The tickets need to be purchased in advance on the official website:
www.aconcagua.mendoza.gov.ar

Implications for the visitors:

  • Stay within the approved zones and respect the instructions of the park staff.
  • Pack out the trash — visitors need to bring their waste back.
The use of drones is not allowed without prior special permission.
  • The cost of rescue operations is expensive; visitors are expected to have the proper equipment and proper insurance.

Visiting Aconcagua represents a once-in-a-lifetime experience of the grandeur of the peaks — and a commitment of respect towards a delicate and irreplaceable environment.

Winds as fast as over 200 km/h.

Severe sun exposure, coldness, and wind exposure.
Critical: Weather conditions change within a matter of minutes — from sunny skies to strong gusts of wind and sudden storms.

Even for a simple hike, the mountain always requires due respect and adequate preparation.

Whether you are coming for a walking excursion or as a challenge to its peaks, in Aconcagua, Mother Nature always speaks the last word.

FLORA AND FAUNA

Low valleys and meltwater meadows (2,800 to 3,300 m):
Meadow grasses: lush green carpets of grass along the streams, such as festuca and coirón.
Flowers of high altitude: very small and hardy species like the Andean violet.
Andean steppe (2,400 to 3,300 m):
Yareta, yellow wood, goat horn: cushion-plant and small shrubs tolerant of harsh winds and cold.
Flora of extreme altitude (above 3,600 m): Few hardy herbs manage to survive, clinging between the rocks, glaciers, and snowfields.
Fauna: Andean condor: the regal sentry of the skies over the Andes.
Guanaco: elegant and tough, patrolling the open slopes and valleys.
Andean puma: the silent predator that holds sway over the high peaks.
Red fox: sly and nimble, adapted to living among the ravines and stones.
Andean toad: inhabitant of the pure meltwater streams, indicator of the good health of the ecosystem.
The flora and fauna of Aconcagua, subtle and mostly unseen, are a testament of the resilience of life near the high peaks.
