A high-altitude trek with a double summit in the Cordón del Plata

Over the course of 3 days, you’ll experience a real expedition in the Andes: the ascent of Cerro Adolfo Calle (4,250 m), with the possibility of summiting the nearby Cerro Stepanek (4,150 m). Two summits in a single journey, deep in the mountains, striking the perfect balance between challenge, nature, and enjoyment.

We’re in the Cordón del Plata, just 90 minutes from Mendoza city. The setting is unlike anywhere else: green meadows, crystal-clear streams, and rocky ridgelines frame your path. On day one, we hike to 3,440 meters and set up our base camp. Day two is summit day — a challenging but deeply rewarding climb. And on day three, we descend with the satisfaction of a true Andean experience.

You’ll hike in a small group, guided by professional mountain guides, with great food, well-planned logistics, and a personal touch. Whether it’s your first 4,000-meter peak or another step in your journey, this trek invites you to connect with the mountains in an authentic way.

What do people remember most from this experience?

• The open views of the Cordón del Plata from the summit

• The double summit, a challenge that never overwhelms

• The energy of the landscape — water, greenery, and rock in the heart of the Andes

• The conversations, shared meals, and human warmth that make this more than just a trek

It’s not just about reaching a summit.

It’s about walking among living mountains, sharing the journey with others, and adding a new story to the ones you’ll carry long after you return home.

OUR RECOMMENDATION

This expedition is perfect if you’re taking your first steps at altitude — or looking to summit a new peak without technical difficulty.

Adolfo Calle is one of the most accessible 4,000-meter mountains: shorter distance, less elevation gain, and a gradual acclimatization that lets you enjoy the journey while still embracing the challenge.

It’s recommended if you’re in excellent physical condition and want to experience what it’s like to sleep in a mountain camp, gain altitude, and reach a double summit in the Andes.

No previous expedition experience is required — but you should be well-trained to hike for several hours with elevation gain and a backpack, in a high-altitude environment.

  • Round-trip transportation from Mendoza city
We’ll pick you up downtown and take you back at the end of the expedition.

  • Professional mountain guide
With experience in high-altitude terrain and safety training for remote areas.

  • Satellite communication and first aid kit
Always ready to respond to any emergency.

  • General camping equipment
Includes tents, stoves, pots, and all essentials for 3 days in the mountains.

  • All meals included
Homemade, nutritious, and adapted to the physical demands of the expedition.

  • Staff trained in first aid
So you can hike with peace of mind.

  • Personal accident insurance
See terms in the FAQ section.

  • Pre-expedition gear advice
We’ll help you choose or rent everything you need for the trek.

NOT INCLUDED

  • Personal equipment: backpack, technical clothing, sleeping bag, etc.

  • Gear rental: if needed, we’ll help you find the right options.

  • Evacuation or rescue costs due to expedition abandonment: see FAQ for details.

  • Mule service for personal or group gear: not included by default, but can be arranged as an extra.

  • Any service not explicitly mentioned above

Day 1. Mendoza – Veguitas Superior Camp

We meet in the morning in Mendoza City and drive toward the Vallecitos mountain area. From there, we start a gentle hike of no more than 3 hours to Veguitas Superior, our high-altitude camp. We spend the night in tents, surrounded by green meadows, crystal-clear streams, and the peaceful silence of the Andes.

  • Distance: 2.8 km · Elevation gain: +440 m · Max altitude: 3,440 m a.s.l. · Estimated duration: 2–3 h

Day 2. Summit attempt

The key day. At sunrise, we begin our ascent to Cerro Adolfo Calle (4,250 m). It’s a long day, with demanding but manageable sections. If the group is feeling strong and the conditions are favorable, we continue on to Cerro Stepanek (4,150 m). After summiting one or both peaks, we return to camp for a well-earned rest.

  • Distance: 8.5 km · Elevation gain: +850 m · Max altitude: 4,250 m a.s.l. · Estimated duration: 7–8 h

The summit attempt depends on weather conditions and the group’s overall condition. Safety is always our top priority.

Day 3. Descent and return to Mendoza

After breakfast, we pack up camp and begin our descent back to the trailhead. There, our transport will be waiting to take us back to Mendoza City — with the satisfaction of having completed a true Andean expedition.

  • Distance: 2.8 km · Elevation loss: –440 m · Max altitude: 3,440 m a.s.l. · Estimated duration: 2 h

Do I need mountaineering experience?

It’s not mandatory, but it’s highly recommended. This ascent can be one of your first 4,000-meter summits, as long as you have excellent physical condition and are used to long hikes carrying weight. The key is to train with aerobic workouts, strength exercises (especially legs and core), and uphill hikes at least 4 times a week.

Can I do this expedition on a private date?

Yes. We offer private departures for solo travelers, couples, or small groups. Same route, same logistics — just tailored to your schedule. Contact us for availability.

What will the weather be like?

It depends on the season, but it’s always demanding.

Summer (October to April): Cold mornings (as low as -10 °C), milder midday temperatures, frequent winds, possible snow, and sudden changes. Stable snow is uncommon on the route.

Winter (May to September): More extreme. Frequent snow, nights down to -15 °C, and increased technical difficulty. Crampons and experience in snowy terrain are mandatory.

In both seasons, you’ll need technical mountain gear and warm clothing. Your safety depends heavily on your preparation.

What if I don’t have all the gear?

We can recommend trusted gear rental shops in Mendoza and help you choose the right equipment for this activity. You’ll also receive a detailed gear list well in advance.

What are the camps like?

They are rustic mountain camps with no showers, electricity, or comforts. We use high-altitude tents only. This expedition means living in nature as it is — a true adventure experience.

How many people per tent?

Three people per tent. This setup helps balance logistics, reduce weight, and streamline camp setup each day.

How many guides will join us?

You’ll have one certified guide for every 3 or 4 participants. This ratio allows us to provide a safe, personalized experience, with close attention to every group member.

What does full board include?

All meals are included: breakfast, trail lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and snacks throughout the 3-day expedition. Example dishes: risotto with pancetta, pasta with sauce, vegetable rice, fajitas, picadas, fresh fruit, nuts, cereal bars, and homemade cookies.

Vegetarian or dietary needs? Just let us know when booking.

Do I have to carry all my gear?

Yes. Each person carries their personal equipment and part of the group gear. Your backpack may weigh up to 18 kg on the first day, so advance training is key.

Can I hire a porter or mule to carry my gear?

Yes, that’s optional. If you’d rather not carry weight, you can hire this service to transport part or all of your gear — but you must request it in advance. It’s subject to availability and mountain conditions.

What if I can’t reach the summit?

Summiting is never guaranteed. If you feel unwell or can’t continue, a guide will walk you back to camp. No one is ever left alone. If you need to descend to Mendoza, the transportation and logistics costs are your responsibility.

Can the itinerary change?

Yes. While everything is carefully planned, weather or group conditions may require changes. Our guides always prioritize safety, and plans may be adjusted without prior notice.

Where does the expedition end?

We finish in the city of Mendoza on the afternoon of the third day. If you’re staying downtown, we’ll drop you off at your accommodation. We recommend booking your night in advance.

How do I book?

A partial payment by bank transfer confirms your spot. The balance is due before departure. Contact us to receive full booking and cancellation conditions.

Do I need a medical check-up?

We recommend it. A physical stress test with a health professional is ideal to evaluate your cardiovascular readiness for this demanding activity.

What are the risks?

You’ll be hiking over rocky terrain, with steep elevation, unpredictable weather, and no comforts. Do not underestimate the mountain — the required gear is mandatory, and both physical and mental preparation are essential.

Why choose us for this experience?

Small groups, real attention

We go with a maximum of 8 people and one guide every 3 participants. This allows us to stay close, adjust the pace when needed, and take care of you every step of the way.

Officially authorized

We are registered active tourism providers with the Mendoza Tourism Board (EMETUR), under file number EX-2019-03119058-GDEMZA-EMETUR.

A team that knows and loves the mountains

We work with people we trust: certified guides, local horsemen, cooks, and drivers we’ve shared many expeditions with. All are trained in first aid and have real mountain experience.
