A short but intense expedition, with views that will stay with you forever.
Over three unforgettable days, you’ll climb Mount Penitentes (4,440 m) — one of the most iconic peaks in the Central Andes. Located just across from Aconcagua Provincial Park, this journey combines physical challenge, raw beauty, and breathtaking views of the highest peak in the Americas.
We start from Mendoza city, heading west into the heart of the Andes. Our route begins in the remote Quebrada de Vargas, surrounded by rugged terrain and native flora. We climb gradually to 3,300 meters on day one, where we set up camp. Summit day follows — demanding, rewarding, and absolutely spectacular. On day three, we pack up and head back down, carrying the kind of fulfillment only the mountains can give.
You’ll hike in a small group, guided by certified professionals, with full logistical support: camping gear, meals, safety, and human connection — all included.

OUR RECOMMENDATION
This experience is perfect if you’re looking to take your first steps —or your next big one— in high-altitude mountaineering, and you have solid physical training.
Cerro Penitentes is not a technical climb, but it does require preparation: three days of sustained hiking, with significant elevation gain, a loaded backpack, and the effects of altitude kicking in.
Among the 4,000-meter peaks, it’s considered one of the most demanding due to its distance and elevation profile.
We recommend it if you’ve already done treks above 3,000 meters, or if you’re in excellent shape and ready to challenge yourself in a wild mountain setting.

Day 1. Mendoza – Refugio Grajales
We depart from Mendoza city and head into the Andes. After a three-hour drive, we begin our hike from Penitentes toward Refugio Grajales. We gain altitude steadily and set up camp to spend the night surrounded by mountains.
- Distance: 6.5 km · Elevation gain: +600 m · Max altitude: 3,250 masl · Estimated duration: 4-5 h
Day 2. Summit attempt
The key day. We start at dawn, eyes set on the summit of Penitentes. The ascent unfolds gradually through demanding, high-mountain terrain. If conditions allow, we reach the 4,440 m summit and enjoy stunning views of Aconcagua before returning to camp.
- Distance: 8 km · Elevation gain: +1,190 m · Max altitude: 4,440 masl · Estimated duration: 9-10 h
The summit attempt depends on weather conditions and the group’s overall condition. Safety is always our top priority.
Day 3. Descent and return to Mendoza
After breakfast, we descend back to Penitentes. From there, our transport takes us back to Mendoza city — bringing home the satisfaction of a true expedition in the Andes.
- Distance: 6.5 km · Elevation gain: -600 m · Max altitude: 3,250 masl · Estimated duration: 3-4 h
Do I need mountaineering experience?
It’s not mandatory, but it’s highly recommended. This can be one of your first 4,000-meter peaks, as long as you’re in excellent physical shape and used to long hikes with weight. We recommend aerobic training, strength exercises (legs and core), and regular uphill hikes at least 4 times per week.
Can I do this expedition on a private date?
Yes. We offer private departures for solo travelers, couples, or small groups. Same route, same logistics — just tailored to your schedule. Contact us for availability.
What will the weather be like?
It depends on the season, but it’s always demanding.
Summer (October to April): Cold mornings (as low as -10 °C), milder midday temperatures, frequent winds, possible snow, and sudden changes. Stable snow is uncommon on the route.
Winter (May to September): More extreme. Frequent snow, nights down to -15 °C, and increased technical difficulty. Crampons and experience in snowy terrain are mandatory.
In both seasons, you’ll need technical mountain gear and warm clothing. Your safety depends heavily on your preparation.
What if I don’t have all the gear?
We can recommend trusted gear rental shops in Mendoza and help you choose the right equipment for this activity. You’ll also receive a detailed gear list well in advance.
What are the camps like?
They are rustic mountain camps with no showers, electricity, or comforts. We use high-altitude tents only. This expedition means living in nature as it is — a true adventure experience.
How many people per tent?
Three people per tent. This setup helps balance logistics, reduce weight, and streamline camp setup each day.
How many guides will join us?
You’ll have one certified guide for every 3 or 4 participants. This ratio allows us to provide a safe, personalized experience, with close attention to every group member.
What does full board include?
All meals are included: breakfast, trail lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and snacks throughout the 3-day expedition. Example dishes: risotto with pancetta, pasta with sauce, vegetable rice, fajitas, picadas, fresh fruit, nuts, cereal bars, and homemade cookies.
Vegetarian or dietary needs? Just let us know when booking.
Do I have to carry all my gear?
Yes. Each person carries their personal equipment and part of the group gear. Your backpack may weigh up to 18 kg on the first day, so advance training is key.
Can I hire a mule to carry my gear?
Yes, it’s optional. If you’d rather not carry weight, you can hire a mule to transport part or all of your gear — just let us know in advance. It’s subject to availability and mountain conditions.
What if I can’t reach the summit?
Summiting is never guaranteed. If you feel unwell or can’t continue, a guide will walk you back to camp. No one is ever left alone. If you need to descend to Mendoza, the transportation and logistics costs are your responsibility.
Can the itinerary change?
Yes. While everything is carefully planned, weather or group conditions may require changes. Our guides always prioritize safety, and plans may be adjusted without prior notice.
Where does the expedition end?
We finish in the city of Mendoza on the afternoon of the third day. If you’re staying downtown, we’ll drop you off at your accommodation. We recommend booking your night in advance.
How do I book?
A partial payment by bank transfer confirms your spot. The balance is due before departure. Contact us to receive full booking and cancellation conditions.
Do I need a medical check-up?
We recommend it. A physical stress test with a health professional is ideal to evaluate your cardiovascular readiness for this demanding activity.
What are the risks?
You’ll be hiking over rocky terrain, with steep elevation, unpredictable weather, and no comforts. Do not underestimate the mountain — the required gear is mandatory, and both physical and mental preparation are essential.
