Over four unforgettable days, you will venture deep into the Andes to relive one of the most moving true stories of human survival.
In 1972, a Uruguayan plane carrying a rugby team crashed in the heart of these mountains. What followed was an extraordinary tale of courage, resilience, and hope — now known as the “Miracle of the Andes.”
This horseback expedition invites you to explore the Valley of Tears, a breathtaking setting filled with memory and emotion. Riding through remote valleys, rugged ravines, and crystal-clear rivers, you’ll retrace the steps of the survivors, guided by local baqueanos who know every corner of this wild land.
The journey culminates at the actual crash site, where remains of the aircraft still lie scattered, and where the powerful silence of the mountains invites deep reflection and respect.
Each day will be an invitation to connect: with the untamed nature of the Andes, with the spirit of those who defied the impossible, and with yourself, sharing campfires, starry skies, and unforgettable moments in the heart of the mountains.
More than just a journey, it’s an experience that will live forever in your memory.

Download our detailed gear guide.
How many guides will accompany the group?
There will be 1 professional guide for every 4–5 participants, ensuring personalized attention and the necessary care for everyone.
What will the weather and temperatures be like?
Temperatures can be extreme and highly variable: you may experience anything from -10°C to 25°C in the same day. The sun is intense, and wind gusts can reach up to 70 km/h. Snowfall is also possible, so it’s crucial to have proper gear for all possible weather conditions.
How many people share a tent?
We use triple tents. This helps optimize logistics and setup time, as we must assemble and disassemble the camps daily.
What are the camps like?
Camps are 100% rustic and self-sufficient: there is no built infrastructure. You won’t be able to bathe (unless in a stream) or wash your clothes.
Will I be able to use my phone or charge devices?
No, there is no cellphone signal or Wi-Fi during the expedition. There’s also no electricity. We recommend bringing a power bank capable of providing at least three full charges for your phone, and keeping your device in airplane mode to save battery.
How is my personal gear transported?
Your personal equipment (up to 10 kg) will be transported by pack mules. Please note that your gear might experience some wear and tear during transport — we recommend renting a reinforced mule bag for better protection.
Can the itinerary change?
Yes. The itinerary is an ideal plan but may change due to weather, terrain, or group conditions. Our professional guides are authorized to make adjustments at any time — always prioritizing the safety and well-being of the group.
What should I expect from this experience?
If you have no prior experience in the mountains, it’s important to know:
The Andes present a harsh environment with very demanding days. You’ll need to protect yourself from intense sun, drink water regularly, walk and ride over very rough and rocky terrain, and manage without comforts.
The requested gear is mandatory due to the high risk posed by the mountain climate. Mental preparedness for facing adversity is also essential.
What costs will I face if I abandon the expedition?
Costs vary depending on the location and the services needed:
A private transfer from the Los Arrieros camp to Mendoza can cost up to USD 450.
If you use a horse to reach the nearest vehicle-accessible point, the cost can be up to USD 80 per day.
Note: All rescue or early-exit costs must be covered by the participant. We will assist you throughout the process and, in the event of a serious emergency, will deploy all necessary resources to ensure your safety.
All costs mentioned are charged by third-party service providers and are not included in Destino Montaña’s services.
